フォトンカウンティングは、単一の光子 (光量子)を検出して数えるための、高感度な測定手法です。従来のアナログ検出方式では、光強度を電流や電圧として連続信号として測定しますが、フォトンカウンティングでは光子1個1個の到来事象を直接的に記録します。この方式は、アナログ増幅でノイズが増加しやすい低照度環境において、特に優れた感度を発揮します。
フォトンカウンティングは、個々の光子を検出してその数をカウントすることで、光強度を求める方式です。光電子増倍管 (PMT)では、各光子の検出によってアバランシェ増倍を経た離散的な信号が生成され、その1回1回がカウント対象となります。
フォトンカウンティングを可能にする中核的な電子回路素子が、コンパレータです (図1参照)。コンパレータには参照電圧 (しきい値)が設定されており、このしきい値を超えた信号のみを有効な光子信号として認識し、背景ノイズは無視します。
コンパレータは、入力信号の振幅がしきい値を超えているかどうかを継続的に比較します。入力信号がしきい値を上回った瞬間にデジタルパルスが生成され、光子の検出イベントが記録されます。
