ハドロン分光学は、ハドロンの性質を研究する粒子物理学の一分野です。ハドロンは、強い相互作用によって結びついたクォークから構成される複合粒子です。ハドロンの性質を記述する理論は量子色力学 (QCD)であり、これはクォークとグルーオンが動的に閉じ込められている粒子としてハドロンを記述するゲージ理論です。ハドロン分光学の主な目的には次のようなものがあります。
格子QCDは、空間と時間を格子状に離散化したラティスゲージ理論です。格子のサイズを無限大にし、格子点の間隔を無限に小さくすると、連続系のQCDが再現されます。
QCDは、クォークqと反クォークq̄がメソン (例:カイオン、パイオン)と呼ばれる粒子に束縛されることを予測します。別の種類のハドロンであるバリオンは3個のクォークから構成され (例:陽子、中性子)、さらにQCDはグルーオンのみからなる状態、いわゆるグルーボールの存在も予言しています。グルーオンは、クォーク間の強い力を媒介する素粒子です。ハドロン分光学のもう一つの重要な研究目標は、エキゾチックメソン、テトラクォーク、ハドロン分子、そしてグルーボールの実験的証拠を見つけることです。
ハドロン物理の主な課題の一つは、グルーオン励起、すなわちグルーオンが主要な構成要素として働くハドロンを探索することです。これらのグルーオン性ハドロンは大きく二つに分類されます。グルーボールは、全ての量子数がグルーオンの寄与によって決まる状態であり、ハイブリッドハドロンは、価電子クォークと反クォークに一つ以上の励起したグルーオンが加わり、全体の量子数に寄与する状態です。
バリオンスペクトルの理解も、非摂動的QCDの主要な研究目標の一つです。特に実験的情報が最も豊富な核子領域では、クォーク模型の予測と実験結果の一致は驚くほど乏しく、ストレンジバリオンに至っては状況はさらに深刻です。これらの課題は、世界中の研究施設 (例:GSI、JLab)で取り組まれています。
GSIでは、重イオンのための世界的にも類を見ない大規模加速器施設が運用されており、その中でPANDA実験が行われています。PANDA実験はハドロン物理を研究するもので、以下のような特性を備えた検出器が必須となります。

提案されている検出器は、相互作用領域を取り囲むソレノイドから成るターゲットスペクトロメータ (TS)と、前方へ飛行する粒子の運動量解析を行うディップール磁石を基盤としたフォワードスペクトロメータ (FS)に区分されています。
2つのスペクトロメータの組み合わせにより、全方位の角度カバレッジが可能となり、幅広いエネルギー領域に対応できます。さらに十分な柔軟性を備えているため、個々のコンポーネントは、特定の実験の必要に応じて交換したり追加したりすることが可能です。

電磁カロリメータ (図2B)、多光子事象やレプトン対チャネルの確実な識別および完全再構成を行うための装置。
反陽子の生成・蓄積・貯蔵を行うための標的およびビームライン
粒子識別検出器 (PID、図2C)
フォワードスペクトロメータ (図2D)、前方方向に飛ぶ荷電粒子の精密なトラッキングと識別、さらに非常に前方方向に飛ぶ中性粒子の高精度測定を行うための装置。
磁石システム (図2E)、荷電粒子の運動量再構成およびその後の粒子識別を行うための装置。
PANDA実験のトラッカーおよびPIDシステムでは、粒子検出にフォトセンサーが使用されており、例えば浜松ホトニクス製のマルチアノード PMT (MaPMT)H12700 および H13700 が採用されています。
PANDAのPID検出器には、DIRC検出器とRICH検出器が含まれています (図2C)。

PANDA実験のBarrel DIRC検出器は、16の光学的に独立したセクターで構成されています。各セクターはバー・ボックスと石英ガラス製プリズムで構成されており、ビームラインを半径 476 mm の16面多角形のバレル形状で取り囲み、極角 22° 〜 140° の範囲をカバーしています (図3)。各バーの前方端には平面ミラーが取り付けられており、光子を読み出し側へ反射します。読み出し側では、3つの要素からなる球面複合レンズを用いて、合成石英で作られた奥行き 30 cm のプリズム (膨張容積として機能)へ光子を集光します。
光子の位置と到着時刻は、11個の光検出器アレイによって測定されます。このセンサーは約1Tの磁場中で動作する必要があるため、PANDAターゲットスペクトロメータ (TS)ソレノイドが生み出す磁場は光子読み出し装置の設計に厳しい制約を与えます。こうした理由から、MCP-PMT (例:浜松ホトニクス製 R13266-07-M64 および R13266-07-M768)が検出器として検討されました。
ハドロン分光に特化したもう一つの実験としてGlueXが挙げられます。GlueXはトーマス・ジェファーソン国立加速器施設 (JLab)で実施されており、図4に示す検出器はエキゾチック・ハイブリッドメソンを観測するために設計されています。

メソン系におけるグルーオン場の励起について、実験結果と理論予測を詳細に比較することで、ハドロン物質内部でクォークを閉じ込める際にグルーオンが果たす役割について、より深い理解が得られると期待されています。
フォトプロダクション (光生成)は、エキゾチック・ハイブリッドメソンを生成する際に特に有効であると考えられていますが、軽いメソンの光生成に関するデータはほとんどありません。GlueXは、一方向に偏極した線偏光光子ビームを生成するために、コヒーレント制動放射 (coherent bremsstrahlung)技術を使用します。この検出器は、中性粒子 (光子、中性子)および荷電粒子 (陽子、パイオン)の検出、識別、全エネルギー測定を担います。
GlueX検出器の中心には電磁バレルカロリメータ (BCAL)が配置されています。BCALは優れたエネルギーおよび時間分解能、低い検出しきい値、そして光子変換により生じる電磁シャワーを完全に収容できる性能を備えている必要があります。
GlueXのBCALは、実験に必要な約2Tの磁場中に挿入され、そこで動作します。この強い磁場は、カロリメータで使用するフォトセンサーの選定に大きな制約を与えます。このような条件下では、通常の真空型PMTは磁場の向きに対して非常に敏感です。
さまざまなセンサーを対象とした広範なテストの結果、GlueXバレルカロリメータのフォトディテクタとして選ばれたのは、浜松ホトニクスが製造したカスタムSiPMアレイでした。メソンの生成と崩壊に関するデータは、ソレノイドベースのヘルメティック検出器によって収集されます。
これらのデータは、従来型メソンのスペクトル研究にも利用され、理解が十分に進んでいない励起ベクターメソンやストレンジオニウムの研究にも貢献します。
