ホドスコープは、検出器を通過する荷電粒子の軌跡を測定するための装置であり、この機能から一般に「トラッカー」とも呼ばれます。
高エネルギー物理実験では、トラッカーは主に頂点 (バーテックス)再構成や運動量測定に使用されます。粒子の軌跡を精密に復元するため、トラッカーは位置検出機能をもつ素子 (位置敏感デバイス)によって構成されています。これらの素子は、シンチレーター材料と光検出器を光学的に結合したもの、またはシリコンストリップ検出器と呼ばれる固体半導体検出器で構成されます。
前者の場合、荷電粒子がシンチレーター材料を通過すると、その一部のエネルギーがシンチレーターに移り、それに比例した量の光が放出されます。この光は光検出器によって検出され、電気信号へと変換されます。各光検出器にはしきい値が設定されており、そのしきい値を超える光が検出された場合、粒子がその位置を通過したと判断されます。
後者の場合、荷電粒子がシリコン中の原子と相互作用することで電子が解放され、電流が発生します。この電流が粒子の通過位置を示します。粒子トラッカーの空間分解能は、用いられる位置敏感デバイスの空間分解能によって制限されます。

高エネルギー物理実験において、トラッカーは粒子衝突に関する定量的情報を得るために不可欠な装置です。このため、トラッカーは可能な限り相互作用点に近い位置に配置されます。トラッカーは、事象の頂点 (バーテックス)再構成や粒子の運動量測定に用いられます。運動量は、磁場中を運動する荷電粒子に作用するローレンツ力を利用することで測定が可能です。
これらの要件から、トラッカーには次の特性が求められます。
荷電粒子に対する高い感度、優れた空間分解能、測定対象となる粒子の軌跡へ影響を与えないための小型化、信号タイミングによる粒子識別を容易にする高速応答、そして多数の粒子を追跡するための低デッドタイムです。
CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid)は、欧州原子核研究機構CERNのLarge Hadron Collider (LHC)に設置された実験のひとつです。この実験の特徴は、ミューオンを精密に測定できる点にあり、複数の検出器層を組み合わせた構造を持ちます。検出器中心部の高エネルギー衝突で生成された粒子は、まずインナートラッカー (図1)を通過します。インナートラッカーは荷電粒子を検出するためのシリコンセンサーシステムで構成されています。

インナートラッカーの外側には、さらに4つの層が配置されています。すなわち、電磁カロリメータ、ハドロニックカロリメータ、超伝導ソレノイド磁石、そして最外層のミューオンチェンバーシステムです。ミューオンチェンバーはガス検出器システムで、通過するミューオンの飛跡を測定するために設計されています。インナートラッカーで測定されたミューオンの飛跡と合わせて解析することで、ミューオンの運動量を高精度で決定することができます。
インナートラッカー全体の長さは5.4 m、直径は2.4 mで、総重量は約3トンです。内部には6600万個のピクセルと960万個のシリコンストリップが配置されており、各ストリップ検出器はn型基板上にp+ ストリップを配置した構造になっています。ストリップピッチは80 µmから205 µmの範囲で変化します。
インナートラッカー内側部分に使用されているシリコンストリップ検出器は、浜松ホトニクスによって製造されました (図2)。
シンチレーターと光検出器を組み合わせて構成されたホドスコープの例として、LHCb実験のアップグレードが挙げられます。LHCbはLHCに設置されたb物理専用の実験であり、bハドロン (bクォークを含む重い粒子)との相互作用におけるCP対称性の破れのパラメータを測定します。
LHCbは、ビッグバン直後に起きた現象、つまり現在の宇宙を形成する物質がどのようにして生き残ったのかを探るために設計されています。トラッキングシステムは4つの矩形ステーションから構成され、各ステーションは約40 m²の領域をカバーしています。これらのトラッキング検出器は荷電粒子の運動量を高精度で推定し、崩壊粒子の質量を高い分解能で測定することを可能にします。
現在、LHCbでは2つの異なる検出器技術が採用されています。ビームパイプ近傍に配置されたシリコントラッカーは、シリコンストリップ検出器を用いて通過する粒子を検出します。一方、ビームパイプから離れた位置に設置されたアウタートラッカーは、数千本のガス入りストロー管で構成されています。

2018年には、既存のトラッキングステーションはシンチレーティングファイバートラッカー (SciFi Tracker/SFT)に置き換えられ、磁石の下流における全受容領域をカバーする予定です。検出器モジュールには、長さ2.5 m、直径 250 µmのシンチレーティングファイバーが使用されます。ファイバーからの光は、Silicon Photomultiplier (MPPC、SiPM とも呼ばれる)によって読み出されます。
多チャンネル検出器アレイは、チャンネルピッチ 250 µm、そして6層のファイバースタックの高さをカバーできるアレイ高さで設計されています。1 つの検出モジュールあたりのチャンネル数は128で、これは64チャンネルMPPCを2基組み合わせて構成されています。
これらのモジュールには、浜松ホトニクス製MPPCアレイ S13552が使用されます。粒子の軌跡に沿って生成された光子はファイバー端まで伝播し、さらに検出器へと導かれます。検出器の各ピクセルは1個の光子を検出でき、その出力信号は発光したピクセルの総数に比例します。
信号 (色付きピクセル)は、図3上部に示されるように、各チャンネルの信号振幅として表されます。粒子の位置は、チャンネル信号の重み付き平均から計算されます。熱雑音 (単一ピクセルの偶発的発火)を抑えるため、ヒットは少なくとも2ピクセル以上が同時に発火したクラスタとして扱われます。
