1933年、カリフォルニア工科大学で研究を行っていたスイスの天文学者 Fritz Zwicky氏は、かみのけ座銀河団における銀河の速度分散を測定し、その値が銀河団の推定総質量から期待されるよりも大きいことを発見しました。Zwicky氏は、この観測されない質量を “ダークマター” と名付けました。
その後1970年代、渦巻銀河の回転曲線の観測データから、銀河円盤の光学的サイズを遥かに超える量の質量が存在することが決定的となり、ダークマターの存在が広く受け入れられました。ダークマターの本質は現代物理学における最も魅力的な課題の一つです。
天体物理学者は銀河の運動を測定することでダークマターの影響を調べられますが、ダークマターそのものが何でできているかは依然として謎のままです。この正体が明らかになれば、宇宙の大規模構造形成の理解が大きく進むだけでなく、未知の新粒子の実験的証拠につながる可能性があります。また、ダークマター粒子に関するいくつかの仮説は、粒子物理学における他の未解決問題を解決する鍵となり得ます。
これらの粒子は物質と非常に弱く相互作用し、陽子の 1〜1000 倍程度の質量を持つと考えられています。これらは “弱く相互作用する大質量粒子 (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles:WIMP)” と呼ばれます。
有力候補の一つに、中性子 (neutralino)があり、これは超対称性理論 (Supersymmetry)が予言する粒子です。超対称性理論ではすべての既知粒子に対応するパートナー粒子が存在し、標準模型の未解決点を説明しようとします。
この段階で必然的に生じる問いは、「では、どのようにしてダークマター粒子を捕捉できるのか?」というものです。世界中の研究所では、多様な手法を用いてダークマター粒子の探索が行われています。現在の実験は、間接探索、直接探索、そして加速器による探索に大別されます。
間接探索では、ダークマター粒子同士の消滅によって生成される標準模型の粒子を観測しようとします。直接探索実験では、検出器内部でダークマター粒子が原子核と散乱する現象の観測を試みます。加速器実験では、高エネルギー粒子ビームの衝突でダークマター粒子が生成される可能性を調べます。
間接探索を行う実験では、ダークマター密度が高いと予測される銀河内の領域を調べます。こうした領域ではダークマター粒子の消滅の確率が高まり、消滅が起こるとガンマ線や粒子・反粒子の対が生成されます。
この追加の粒子フラックスは、衛星や地上望遠鏡で観測することができます。しかし、ガンマ線や粒子の背景事象は十分な精度で理解されていないことが多く、明確な結論を得ることは容易ではありません。間接探索の例としては、AMS (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer)やANTARES (Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch)が挙げられます。AMSは国際宇宙ステーションに搭載された実験で、複数の検出器を用いて粒子識別を行います。
AMSは電子、陽電子、反陽子、原子核を TeV 領域まで測定し、宇宙線スペクトルを研究します。陽電子の過剰はダークマターの存在を示す間接的手がかりとなります。粒子がAMS検出器を通過した際の信号測定には、浜松ホトニクス製 R5900 PMTが使用されています。ANTARESはフランス・トゥーロン沖 40 km、地中海の水深 2475 mに設置されたニュートリノ望遠鏡で、銀河中心および太陽に蓄積したWIMPに対して高い感度を持っています。
ANTARESでは、浜松ホトニクス製 R7081-20光電子増倍管を縦方向に並べたアレイを採用しており、約 0.1 平方キロメートルの領域に配置されています。

ダークマター粒子が標的原子核と散乱することで生じる核反跳を観測することにより、ダークマター粒子を検出することを目的とするのが直接探索実験です。この散乱で十分なエネルギーが原子核へ伝われば、反跳した原子核を検出することができます。
最大の課題は、外部放射線によって生じる事象がダークマター粒子との散乱に非常によく似てしまうため、両者を識別することが難しい点にあります。
そのため、直接探索実験は通常、深い地下実験施設に設置され、標的物質および検出器には極めて純度の高い材料が使われます。さらに背景事象を低減するため、放射性不純物をほとんど含まない材料のみが選ばれます。
現在の直接探索実験の多くは、核反跳を検出するために、誘導熱、電離信号、シンチレーション光のいずれか、または組み合わせを用いています。XENON100 (将来のアップグレードであるXENON1TやXENONnTを含む)やDarkSideは、その代表例です。XENON100ダークマター探索実験は、INFNグランサッソ地下研究所に設置された実験で、液体キセノンとその上部にある気体キセノン層を用いた二相式タイムプロジェクションチェンバー (TPC)を、約 -95 ℃で動作させています。液体キセノン中で粒子が相互作用すると、励起と電離電子の再結合により一次シンチレーション光が生成されます。
これらの電離電子は液体と気体の界面へとドリフトし、そこで二次シンチレーション光を生成します。
TPCの上部と下部には、浜松ホトニクス製 R8520-06-AL (1 インチ角PMT)がそれぞれアレイとして配置されており、TPC内の光を検出します。大きな検出質量と極めて低いバックグラウンド環境を組み合わせた XENON100プロジェクトは、WIMPと通常物質の相互作用に対して最も厳しい制限を与える実験の一つとなっています。
DarkSideプログラムでは、新しい二相式液体アルゴンTPCを段階的に開発する計画が進められています。これらの検出器は、ダークマター信号を識別し、背景を理解・抑制するために、いくつかの革新的技術を採用しています。成功したプロトタイプ (DarkSide-10)に続き、プログラム最初の物理観測用検出器であるDarkSide-50 (DS-50)は、現在INFNグランサッソ国立研究所に設置されています。50 kgの有効質量を持つこの検出器は、陽子質量の100倍のWIMPも探索できる感度を備えています。DS-50の二相式液体アルゴンTPCはXENON100と類似した検出手法を用いています。シンチレーション光は、浜松ホトニクス製R11065 (3 インチPMT)38 本 (上部19本、下部19本)によって記録されます。DarkSide-50の建設は2012年末に完了し、2013年から物理データの取得が始まりました。
Xenonグループは最近、XENON100より検出能力を大幅に向上させたXenon1T実験の運転を開始しました。
CERNの大型ハドロン衝突型加速器 (LHC)を用いる研究者たちは、陽子・陽子衝突によって生成され得るダークマター粒子を探索しています。この加速器で到達可能なエネルギーは非常に高く、ダークマターを構成し得る未知の粒子を生成する可能性があります。
もしLHCにおける陽子衝突でダークマター粒子が生成された場合、ATLASやCMSなどの実験では予測よりも少ないエネルギーが観測されるはずです。
ダークマター粒子は長寿命で、物質との相互作用が極めて稀であると考えられているため、生成されても検出器内に痕跡を残さずにそのまま通過してしまうためです。
