Time-of-Flight (ToF)システムは、スタートカウンターとストップカウンターとして動作する2つの検出器間での信号時間差を、高い時間分解能で測定する装置です。粒子・宇宙線物理では、主に粒子種を識別するために用いられます。典型的な検出器は、シンチレーターカウンターと光検出器から構成され、時間分解能は約50〜100 µs (AMS-02 ToF参照)、あるいは約30〜50 µsの時間分解能を持つ抵抗板検出器 (RPC)が用いられます。後者の構成は、大型検出器において費用対効果の高い手法です (ALICE実験のMRPC参照)。
粒子の運動量が既に既知である場合 (ビームライン要素により運動量が選別される、あるいは磁気スペクトロメータなど別の検出器で測定される場合)、粒子識別にはもう一つの観測量が必要になります。同じ運動量を持つ2つの粒子が、ToFシステムの2つのカウンター間の距離を移動するのに要する時間の違いは、粒子の質量二乗の違いに比例します。システムが達成できる粒子識別能力は、カウンター間の距離および粒子の運動量に依存します。
システムが測定する観測量は、第1のシンチレーターから第2のシンチレーターまで粒子が移動するのに要する時間、すなわち、Δt = t₂ − t₁ = L / (cβ)、で表される開始時刻と終了時刻の差です。ここでLは2つのシンチレーター間の距離、βは粒子の速度です。2つの粒子を識別するには、この飛行時間差を評価する必要があります。
ここでpは運動量、βp1 と βp2はそれぞれ2種類の粒子の速度、mp1とmp2はそれぞれの質量です。例えば、粒子がパイオンとカイオン (mk ≈ 500 MeV、mpi ≈ 140 MeV)であるとします。このとき p=1 GeV、L=1 mと仮定すると、ΔT は ≈ 300 psになります。
したがって、時間分解能がおよそ300 psのToFシステムであれば、1 GeVまでの運動量領域でパイオンとカイオンを識別することが可能です。
AMS-02 (Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer)は、国際宇宙ステーション (ISS)上で運用されるよう設計された検出器で、反物質やダークマターの探索、さらには宇宙線の組成やフラックスの精密測定を通じて、宇宙とその起源を研究することを目的としています。
AMS-02スペクトロメータの中心には、大型磁石が設置されています。これは、装置を通過する各粒子の電荷の符号を測定するために不可欠な要素です。複数の検出器を組み合わせて使用することで、粒子種の識別やその特性の測定が可能になります。
TRD (Transition Radiation Detector:遷移放射検出器)は、宇宙線の中から電子と陽電子を識別するために使用されます。シリコントラッカーは粒子の電荷符号を測定し、物質と反物質を区別します。
RICH (Ring-Imaging Cherenkov Detector)は、宇宙線の速度を高精度で測定するために用いられます。ECAL (Electromagnetic Calorimeter)は、入射する電子、陽電子、γ線のエネルギーを測定します。さらに、ACC (Anti-Coincidence Counter)は、磁石の外側を通過する宇宙線を排除する役割を担っています。
AMS-02のToFシステムは、磁石の上部に2層、下部に2層の合計4層のシンチレーターカウンターで構成されています。その主な目的は、入射する宇宙線の到来を他のサブ検出器へ知らせることです。上部ToFと下部ToFの両方を通過した粒子は、AMSの受容領域に入ったとみなされます。粒子がAMS内部を通過する時間はToFによって高精度 (1.5×10⁻¹⁰ s)で測定され、荷電粒子に対する第一段階のトリガーを提供します。
ToFの時間分解能は、上向きと下向きに移動する粒子の識別、1.5 GeV以下の領域での電子と反陽子の識別、さらにZ ≤ 20の原子核の識別にも十分対応しています。
ToFシステムの各層は、およそ1.2 m²の円形領域をカバーしており、幅12 cmのシンチレーターパッドが、幾何学的な検出効率の低下を避けるために0.5 cmずつ重ねて配置されています。シンチレーターは両端に設置されたアクリル製ライトガイドを介して、4または6本の光電子増倍管 (PMT)へと結合されており、2次元 (XとY)の読み出しが可能です。
PMTの設置位置では磁場強度が1.5〜2 kGと非常に高いため、特殊なPMTの採用が必要となり、浜松ホトニクス製のファインメッシュ型 R5946が使用されました。
このPMTはバイアルカリ光電面、ホウケイ酸ガラスのウィンドウ、そして16段のファインメッシュダイノードを備えています。分光感度範囲は 300〜600 nmで、最大感度は約420 nm (量子効率は約20%)にあります。
ファインメッシュPMTは強磁場中でも動作可能ですが、その応答は磁場方向とPMTの長軸との角度に強く依存します。このため、各PMTにおいてこの角度を最小にするよう、傾斜を付けたライトガイドが設計されました。
AMS-02は国際宇宙ステーション (ISS)上で運用されているため、ToF検出器は −20°Cから +50°Cの温度変化にさらされます。10本のPMTを用いた試験が、INFNボローニャ研究所の熱真空シミュレーターにて、10⁻⁷〜10⁻⁶ mbarの真空環境下で −30°C 〜 +55°Cの温度範囲にわたり行われました。各温度サイクル後に再較正が行われましたが、PMTの特性は変化せず安定したままでした。
