シンチレーターは、荷電粒子が通過した際にシンチレーションを発する透明な材料です。荷電粒子が物質内の分子を励起し、分子が脱励起する際に、入射放射線のエネルギーに比例した数の光子が生成されます。光は光電子増倍管 (PMT)、フォトダイオード、シリコンフォトマル (SiPM)などの電子式光センサーとシンチレーターを結合することで電流へ変換されます。
このような光センサーの出力を読み取ることで、入射放射線のエネルギーを測定することができます。
電子式光センサーは、高速応答、高い検出効率という特性を備えており、無機・有機のどちらの材料もシンチレーターとして利用できるため、非常に多くの選択肢があります。
無機シンチレーターはエネルギー変換効率に優れていますが、潮解性があり、衝撃や振動に弱いなど、取り扱いが難しいという欠点があります。
有機シンチレーターにはプラスチックシンチレーターと液体シンチレーターがあり、短い減衰時間を持ち、潮解しないという利点があります。さらに、プラスチックシンチレーターは容易に切断・加工でき、扱いやすいことも特徴です。これらの性質により、PET (陽電子放出断層撮影法)に代表される医用画像診断、石油探査、原子力発電所の監視、そしてもちろん粒子物理など、幅広い分野で利用されています。
ニュートリノ検出に主に用いられる検出器構成として、液体シンチレーターで満たされたタンクを使用する方式があります。実際、1956年に Frederick Reines氏 と Clyde Cowan氏 によってニュートリノが初めて検出された際には、水に液体シンチレーターとガドリニウムを溶解させた検出器が用いられました。
同様の検出器技術を用いる現代の実験として、日本のKamLAND (Kamioka Liquid-scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector)、中国の 大亜湾原子炉ニュートリノ実験 (Daya Bay)、フランスのDouble Chooz、韓国のRENO (Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation)などが挙げられます。
この種類の実験では、原子炉から放出される反ニュートリノを、逆ベータ崩壊 (IBD)によって生成される粒子を手がかりに検出します。IBDは、電子反ニュートリノが陽子と散乱し、陽電子と中性子を生成する核反応です。中性子を確実に検出するため、液体シンチレーターには通常、ガドリニウムが添加されます。ガドリニウムは中性子捕獲断面積が非常に大きいためです。
これらの実験の主目的は、ニュートリノが異なるフレーバーへと変換される重要な現象、すなわちニュートリノ振動を研究することにあります。
KamLANDは、日本アルプスの鉱山坑道にある旧Kamiokandeの空洞内に設置されています。実験装置は直径18 mのステンレス鋼製球形容器から成り、その内側には浜松ホトニクス製PMT (R7250 型)が1879本、直径20インチで高速応答特性を持ち、内壁に取り付けられています。球体の内部には、直径13 mのナイロン製バルーンがあり、その中には液体シンチレーターが満たされています。
球体の外側には、シンチレーションを発しない高純度のオイルが満たされており、バルーンを浮力によって支持するとともに、外部からの放射線を遮蔽します。ステンレス鋼製容器のさらに外側には水チェレンコフ検出器が設置されており、外部からのバックグラウンドを除去する役割を果たします。反ニュートリノは、実験地点から約180 kmに位置する日本の53基の商用原子炉の炉心に存在する放射性元素のベータ崩壊によって生成されます。
Daya Bay実験は、香港から北東へ約52 kmの位置にあります。実験は8基の反ニュートリノ検出器で構成されており、1.9 km以内に配置された6基の原子炉に対応する3 つのサイトに分散しています。各検出器には20 tの液体シンチレーターがガドリニウムでドープされており、逆ベータ崩壊反応のターゲットとして機能します。
ターゲットの外側には「ガンマキャッチャー」と呼ばれる領域があり、20 tの未ドープ液体シンチレーターが満たされています。これはターゲット領域から漏れ出す γ線を検出する目的で設けられています。さらにその外側には37 tの鉱油が充填されており、検出器コンポーネントからの放射線を遮蔽しています。外側領域とステンレス鋼製容器の側壁周囲には、浜松ホトニクス製 20 cm R5912耐油型PMTが192本配置されています。上面と底面にはPMTは設置されておらず、その代わりに高反射パネルが取り付けられています。検出器全体は水槽内に沈められており、周囲の岩盤からの放射線を低減するため、少なくとも2.5 mの水深が確保されています。
水槽は光学的に内側・外側に分割されており、いずれも浜松ホトニクス製 20 cm R5912耐油型PMTを備えた水チェレンコフ検出器として機能します。さらに水槽の上部には、ミューオン検出用として抵抗板検出器 (RPC)が設置されています。
Double Chooz実験は、フランスのChooz原子力発電所をニュートリノ源として利用しており、原子炉からそれぞれ400 mと1050 mの地点に設置された2 基の検出器から構成されています。両検出器には、ガドリニウムでドープされた液体シンチレーターが充填されています。検出器は複数の同心円筒から構成されています。最内層には、透明アクリル容器に収められた 8.3 tのガドリニウムドープ液体シンチレーターがあり、ニュートリノはこの領域で相互作用します。この内槽の外側には未ドープの液体シンチレーターが満たされたアクリル容器があり、さらにその外側には鉱油を満たしたバッファタンクが配置されています。バッファタンクは最内層を取り囲む検出器部品からの放射線を遮蔽する役割を担います。
内層には、25 cmの浜松ホトニクス製 R5912耐油型PMTが390本配置されています。また、検出器外部からのバックグラウンドを除去するために、20 cmの浜松ホトニクス製 R1408PMTが78本取り付けられています。これら2つの部分の外側には、近距離検出器では1 mの水層が、遠距離検出器では15 cmの鉄層が追加の遮蔽として配置されています。検出器上部には、宇宙線ミューオンを識別するためのプラスチックシンチレーターのストリップモジュールが設置されています。
RENO実験は、韓国南西部の沿岸地域にあるHanbit原子力発電所の近くに位置しています。この発電所は6基の原子炉から構成されており、それぞれが約260 mの間隔で一直線上に配置されています。ニュートリノ検出器は、中央の原子炉群から294 mの地点に1 基、1383 mの地点にもう1 基設置されています。各検出器は、4層の入れ子状の円筒構造からなり、異なる液体が満たされています。主要な内側検出器 (ID)は、直径5.4 m、高さ5.8 mのステンレス鋼製円筒容器内に収められ、その内部には2層の円筒アクリル容器が配置されています。
