宇宙線は、宇宙空間から飛来する荷電粒子または光子の総称です。そのエネルギーはMeV領域から少なくとも10²⁰ eV まで、14桁以上にわたり広い範囲に分布します。宇宙線のフラックスは、GeV領域では1 m²あたり毎秒10³ 個以上ですが、PeVでは1 m²あたり年間約1 個、さらに100 EeV を超える領域では1 km²あたり1 世紀に1 個未満にまで減少します。
そのため、10¹⁴ eV 程度までの低エネルギー領域ではフラックスが十分に強く、気球や地球大気外で作動する人工衛星に搭載した検出器を用いて直接観測が可能です。しかし、より高エネルギーの宇宙線は直接観測が難しく、間接的な手法に頼らざるを得ません。一次宇宙線が大気と相互作用することで生成される 大気シャワー (Extensive Air Showers, EAS) を地表の広域観測施設で捉え、地上で測定されたシャワーの特徴から一次宇宙線の情報を再構成します。
EAS の縦方向プロファイルはチェレンコフ検出器または蛍光検出器によって調べられ、横方向分布は通常シンチレーター、RPC (抵抗板検出器)、あるいは水チェレンコフ検出器などから構成される地上アレイによって測定されます。
ピエールオージェ観測所は、10¹⁷ eVを超えるエネルギーをもつ宇宙線 (UHECR:超高エネルギー宇宙線)を研究するために設計された観測施設です。
この観測所は、アルゼンチンのメンドーサ州マラルグエ近郊、標高約1400 mのパンパ地帯に位置しています。施設は、3000 km²の領域に1660基の水チェレンコフ式表面検出器 (SD)を配置した陣列と、それを観測する 27 台の蛍光望遠鏡 (FD)から構成されています。
表面検出器ステーションは、底面積10 m²のポリエチレン製タンクで構成されており、内部には12 m³の超純水が満たされています。水中を荷電粒子が通過する際に発生するチェレンコフ光は、直径9インチの光電子増倍管 (PMT) 3本によって検出されます。
検出器で収集された信号パルスは大きさが異なり、時間にわたる信号の総和は、粒子が検出器内で堆積させたエネルギーに対応します。
信号の大きさと各ステーションへの到来時刻から、シャワーのエネルギーと到来方向を再構成することが可能です。ステーションで観測される信号は、主に電磁成分とミューオン成分によって支配されています。3つ目の成分であるハドロン成分は、地球大気中で吸収されます。ミューオン成分は、SDステーションでは直接測定できず、さまざまな手法を用いて評価する必要がありますが、UHECRの質量組成を調べるうえで非常に有力な指標です。
この成分の含有量は、一次宇宙線が大気中で起こす最初のハドロン相互作用に関連しています。ピエールオージェ観測所が対象とするエネルギー領域では、ハドロン断面積は十分に知られておらず、世界最強の加速器であるLHCにおいて、より低いエネルギーで測定された断面積を外挿することで推定されています。
そのため、ミューオン成分の推定は、ハドロン断面積の外挿から得られる複数のハドロン相互作用モデルに強く依存します。オージェで得られたデータから導かれるミューオン数は、どのハドロンモデルによるシミュレーションと比較しても常に大きくなっています。ハドロンモデルを制約し、高統計で質量組成を調べるための信頼できる指標を得るためには、ミューオン成分を正確に測定することが極めて重要です。
シャワーの縦方向プロファイルにおける最大発達深さ (Xmax)は、FDによって測定される質量組成解析の強力な指標ですが、FDは晴天かつ月明かりの少ない夜間にしか運用できず、稼働率は約15%に限られています。一方、SDの稼働率は100%です。
Pierre Auger Collaborationは、表面検出器のアップグレード計画であるAugerPrimeを進めています。このアップグレードの主目的は、ミューオン成分と電磁成分を識別する能力を高めることです。
アップグレードの中心となるのは Surface Scintillator Detector (SSD) であり、これは約4 m²のプラスチックシンチレーター検出器で、すべてのSDステーションの上部に設置されます。
SSDは電磁成分に対して高い感度を持つ一方、水チェレンコフ検出器 (WCD)の信号は主にミューオン成分に支配されます。この2つの異なる感度をもつ測定を組み合わせることで、各シャワーに含まれるミューオン数を推定することが可能になります。各SSDは2つのシンチレーター・サブモジュールで構成されており、それぞれは押し出し成形されたポリスチレン製シンチレーター・バー (長さ約1.6 m、幅5 cm、厚さ1 cm)から成ります。
シンチレーターで発生した光は、シンチレーター面にまっすぐ開けられた押し出し穴に挿入された波長シフトファイバーによって読み出され、束ねられて単一の光電子増倍管に接続されます。
エネルギー10²⁰ eV、天頂角38度のシャワーの場合、シャワーコア (一次宇宙線の方向を地上に投影した衝突点で、地表における粒子密度が最も高くなる位置)から200 mの地点に設置された4 m²のSSDにおけるピーク信号は、およそ12,000 MIP (Minimum Ionizing Particles)と予想されています。
したがって、UHECRに対して最大12,000 MIP程度の信号を想定することは、ダイナミックレンジを決定するうえで妥当な上限値となります。この全範囲を線形にカバーするためには、十分な線形性を備えたPMTが必要です。
アップグレードで採用されるPMTは、シンチレーション光の波長領域で高い量子効率を持つとともに、優れた利得特性とピークアノード電流に対する広い線形範囲を備えていることが求められます。
さらに、動作範囲 (ダイナミックレンジ)を拡張するために、カソード面積の小さい4本目のPMTがWCDに追加される予定です。飽和するステーションを減らすことは、シャワー再構成の不確かさを低減するうえで重要です。
このSmall PMT (標準のPMTは直径230 mmの受光面を持つためLarge PMTと呼ばれます)には、良好な動作利得と優れた線形性範囲が求められます。
アップグレードされた取得ステーションの一部で最初の測定が行われた後、AugerPrimeの追加検証が進められ、最終的な設計仕様が確定される予定です。
