夜空を見上げることは誰にとっても身近な体験ですが、可視光は電磁スペクトル全体のほんの一部にすぎません。実際には、私たちの目には見えないものの、はるかに明るく強烈な現象が宇宙には数多く存在します。ガンマ線バースト (GRB)はその代表例です。わずか数秒の間に、たった1 回の GRB が太陽の100億年にわたる寿命全体で放射するのと同じ量のエネルギーを放出することがあります*1。しかし、その波長は非常に短く、地球大気の上層で吸収されてしまうため、私たちの目では直接観測することはできません。
GRBは、恒星同士の衝突やブラックホール近傍での爆発など、宇宙の極めて激しい側面を明らかにする現象です。この劇的な天体現象への科学者たちの強い関心から、高エネルギー電磁放射線を観測するための専用機器が開発されました。それがFermiガンマ線宇宙望遠鏡 (Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope:FGST) です。
FGSTは2008年に打ち上げられ、約90分で地球を1周する軌道を周回しています。搭載された2つの主要センサー、Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) とLarge Area Telescope (LAT) は空全体を走査し、X線からガンマ線に至る幅広いエネルギー領域で興味深い事象を観測します*1。GBMは8 keVから30 MeVの放射を捉え、LATは20 MeVから300 GeVのガンマ線まで観測範囲を広げました。それ以前の宇宙観測装置は最大30 GeV程度までしか対応できなかったため、この新しいセンサーは観測可能なエネルギー帯域を大幅に拡張し、GRB研究に革新的な進歩をもたらしました。しかし、このような高性能センサーを宇宙機に搭載するために開発・構築する作業は、極めて大きな技術的課題を伴うものでした。

FermiのLAT (Large Area Telescope)は、対生成を利用してガンマ線を検出するよう設計されたモジュール式の観測装置です。ガンマ線が金属層に衝突すると、電子と陽電子のペアへと変換されることがあります。LAT は、高精度のシリコン・トラッキング検出器の多層構造によって、これら生成粒子の飛跡をたどり、入射したガンマ線の到来方向を特定します。続いてカロリメータが粒子のエネルギーを吸収・測定することで、総エネルギーを算出し、最初のガンマ線のエネルギーを明らかにします*1。
FermiのLATは、4×4 の同一構造の検出タワーで構成されており、それぞれがトラッカー、カロリメータ、そしてカスタムの読み出し電子モジュールを備えています。トラッカーは36層のシリコンセンサー層から構成され、それぞれが4×4のシリコンストリップセンサー配列を持ち、さらに18層のタングステン板が組み合わされています。
Fermi LATは合計 83 m²におよぶシリコンセンサー面積と、ほぼ100万チャンネルにも及ぶ読み出しチャンネル数を誇り、これまで宇宙用途として製造された中で最大のシリコンストリップ検出器となっています。

しかし、宇宙用途向けの大規模センサーを開発するには、特にサブ原子粒子の飛跡を追跡するシリコンストリップセンサーにおいて、多くの厳しい要件が課せられました*2。LATの検出面積が非常に大きいため、必要となるセンサー枚数を大幅に減らせる大型センサーデザインが求められたのです。さらに、宇宙空間では電力は太陽電池でまかなう必要があるため、ストリップセンサーの消費電力は極めて低くなければなりません。1万個近いストリップセンサーそれぞれの消費電力が低ければ低いほど良いという状況でした*2。こうした要件を満たし、かつ短期間で高品質の量産が可能なメーカーを確保することは極めて重要でした*2。なぜなら、チームには わずか5年間でセンサーを完成させる という厳しい制限があったからです。
これらの難題に応えるべく、チームは2001年に浜松ホトニクスへ協力を求めました。当時、浜松ホトニクスは4インチウェハによるシリコンストリップセンサーをすでに製造していましたが、より大型のセンサーを実現するには6インチウェハ対応の新しい製造ライン が必要でした*2。これは大きな投資を伴う挑戦でした。加えて、当初のセンサーの電力消費は宇宙用途に適しておらず、設計そのものの見直しが不可欠でした。しかし浜松ホトニクスはこの挑戦を受け止め、驚くべき成果を生み出しました。 最適化されたセンサーは、電子回路を含めても1チャンネルあたり数マイクロワット しか消費しません*2。
驚くべきことに、総重量3トンでほぼ100万チャンネルの電子回路を備えるLAT全体が消費する電力は、一般的な家庭用ヘアドライヤーの半分以下なのです*1。製造ラインは極めて安定して稼働し、浜松ホトニクスはその後3年間で、設計を一新した6インチ Si ストリップセンサーを1万2500枚生産・試験し、出荷しました。さらに、その不合格率はわずか0.6%という驚異的な品質管理水準を達成しました*2。
この優れた製造品質は、プロジェクトの進行に決定的な役割を果たしました。それまで必要とされていた約100万個のストリップを個別に測定する方法 から、約1万個のセンサー単位での一括試験へ移行できたため、大幅な時間短縮につながったのです。こうしてLATセンサーのテストと製造は加速し、望まれた2008年の宇宙打ち上げを見事に間に合わせることができました。
さらなる証拠として、Fermiの15周年の際、倉庫で15年以上保管されていた予備センサーが試験的に小型トラッカーとして組み立てられましたが、これらのセンサーは見事に正常動作し、その高い品質と信頼性が改めて証明されました。
これまでFermiのLATセンサーは、多くの発見をもたらし、私たちの宇宙に対する理解を大きく塗り替えてきました。新たなパルサーの発見、巨大なガンマ線バーストに関する洞察、そして謎に包まれたダークマターの性質の探究など、その成果は多岐にわたります。なかでも最も重要な成果のひとつは、それまで未知であった多くの新しいガンマ線源を検出したことです。これらの成果は宇宙地図を大きく広げただけでなく、既存の理論や宇宙現象モデルに新たな挑戦を突きつけるものとなりました*4。
当初、5年間 (延長して10年間)の運用を想定して設計されたFermiガンマ線宇宙望遠鏡は、15年以上が経過した現在もなお現役で稼働しており、科学コミュニティにとって極めて重要な存在であり続けています。特に、近年急速に発展しているマルチメッセンジャー天文学は、Fermiの観測結果によって多大な恩恵を受けています*4、5。この新しい研究分野は、重力波、ニュートリノ、宇宙線、電磁波といった複数の「メッセンジャー」を連携して観測することで、宇宙現象を多角的に理解するアプローチです。それぞれ異なる天体物理過程によって生み出されるため、観測対象に関する異なる情報をもたらし、相互補完的に宇宙の姿を明らかにします*4、5。
このように、Fermiガンマ線宇宙望遠鏡が使命を果たし続ける限り、私たちは高エネルギー宇宙のほとんど見えない世界から、新たな発見を得られる可能性を持ち続けています。複数のメッセンジャーから得られる洞察が融合することで、宇宙の複雑な仕組みを解き明かす能力はさらに高まり、絶えず進化し続ける宇宙理解の物語に、新たな章が加わることでしょう。
