Time-Projection Chamber (TPC)検出器は、粒子・原子核物理で使用される検出器の一種です。一般に、ガスまたは液体からなる感度体積と、それに印加される強い電場、位置敏感型電子収集装置、そして読み出しシステムから構成されます。高エネルギー粒子が感度体積を通過すると、その飛跡に沿って電離電子が生成されます。TPC はこの電離の空間分布を検出し、入射粒子のエネルギー損失の三次元的な情報を完全に再構成することができ、粒子識別を可能にします。
検出体積における液体状態の希ガス、特にアルゴン (LAr)やキセノン (LXe)が広く用いられるのは、それらが高い原子番号と密度を持ち、大型でありながらコンパクトかつ均質な検出器の構築を可能にするためです。また、希ガス類は放射線の通過に対してシンチレーション光を発します。中でもアルゴンとキセノンは、電離量・シンチレーション量が最も大きい希ガスに属します。電離とシンチレーションは相補的かつ反相関の関係にあり、両者を同時に測定することで、入射粒子の特性をより完全かつ精密に再構成できます。
LArおよびLXe TPCは、加速器実験・非加速器実験の両方に使用されており、陽子崩壊や二重ベータ崩壊、ニュートリノやダークマター探索、またイメージング検出器としても利用されています。
浜松ホトニクスは、この分野の技術発展において重要な役割を果たしてきました。特に、真空紫外 (VUV)領域に感度を持つ光電子増倍管 (PMT)の開発は重要な貢献です。
アルゴンやキセノンは、電離によって電荷キャリアとシンチレーション光の両方を生成するだけでなく、電気陰性度が非常に低いため、電離で生じた電子が読み出しシステムに向かう途中で再捕獲されることがありません。
LArおよびLXe TPC検出器技術の発展は、それぞれImaging Cosmic and Rare Underground Signals (ICARUS)およびXENON実験の取り組みによって大きく推進されてきました。
ICARUSは760トンの検出器で、3.5 × 3.9 × 19.9 mの2つのモジュールから構成され、内部には液体アルゴン (LAr)が満たされています。2010年から2014年にかけて、イタリア・Gran Sasso研究所において、CERNから送り込まれるニュートリノビームを用いてニュートリノ振動の研究に使用されました。
ICARUSの動作原理は比較的シンプルです。検出器中心部には高電圧カソードによって一様な電場が印加されています。高エネルギー粒子がこの体積内を通過すると、その飛跡に沿って電離が生じます。生成された電子はドリフトし、検出器側面に配置された読み出しシステムへ到達します。この読み出しシステムは、異なる角度で配置された3層の平行ワイヤプレーンで構成されており (これがTPCに相当します)、各プレーンはドリフト電子の到達時刻と位置を記録します。ドリフト時間と合わせて解析することで、事象の三次元画像を再構成することが可能です。
ドリフト時間は、粒子の電離が発生したタイミングを把握することで求められます。これは、ワイヤプレーンの背後に配置されたPMTによって取得されます。PMTは、粒子が検出器内を通過する際に発生するシンチレーション光をほぼ瞬時に検出することができ、この情報がドリフト時間決定の基準となります。
電離信号とシンチレーション信号を同時に検出することにより、液体中で相互作用した一次粒子を識別することができます。
XENONダークマター探索プロジェクトは、段階的に大型化・高感度化した液体キセノン (LXe)デュアルフェーズTPC、一連の装置群から構成されており、XENON10、XENON100、XENON1Tの名は、それぞれの有効 (fiducial)ターゲット質量 (kg)に由来します。
デュアルフェーズTPCチェンバーでは、液体キセノン層の上に気相キセノンの領域が存在します。入射粒子は電離とシンチレーションの両方の信号を生成します。シンチレーション光 (一次シンチレーション)は主に液体側に配置されたPMT群によって検出されます。一方、電離電子は検出器内部を上方へドリフトし、クライオスタット上部の気相近傍に到達します。ここには強い電場が印加されており、液体層から電子を引き抜く (液相→気相への電子抽出)役割を担っています。気相へ引き抜かれた電子は、電場中で加速されることで比例シンチレーション光 (“電界発光”あるいは “proportional scintillation” と呼ばれる過程による)を放出し、これは気相側に配置されたPMTによって検出されます。
気相側PMTは、各PMTが受け取った光子数の分布から、入射粒子のx–y位置を決定します。
一方、z座標 (深さ方向)は、一次シンチレーション光と比例シンチレーション光の到達時間差から求められます。液体中の電子ドリフト速度は一様であるため、この時間差がそのまま電子のドリフト距離に対応します。
この種の検出器には、ダークマター粒子の探索に特に適しているいくつかの特長があります。第一に、電子を長距離にわたってドリフトさせることができるため、大型の検出器を構築できます。第二に、増幅された電荷信号を複数の独立した電荷収集プレーンで共有できることから、事象の三次元再構成の効率が向上します。第三に、電離光とシンチレーション光の比率の違いを用いることで、中性子による核反跳と電子反跳を明確に区別できるため、バックグラウンド信号を効果的に抑制できます。また、ダークマター探索で問題となるγ線やβ線によって生じるバックグラウンドも識別し、排除することが可能です。
過去の初期のLXe検出器の多くは、シンチレーション光の効率的な検出が困難であったため、主として電離信号のみを利用していました。1990年代半ば、XENONコラボレーションは浜松ホトニクスと共同で、LXe中で動作可能な高感度PMTの開発を目指した研究開発プログラムを開始しました。PMTに関するこの協力を含む技術進展により、XENON10からXENON1Tへと進む過程で検出感度は1000倍向上しました。すでに XENON100の段階で、背景事象は浜松ホトニクス製R8520-06-AL PMTなどの貢献により100倍低減されています。2014年にGran Sasso研究所で建設が始まったXENON1Tでは、浜松ホトニクス製 R11410-21が搭載される予定です。
ダークマター探索やニュートリノ研究の検出器技術の進歩は、シンチレーション光検出器の発展と密接に関連しています。浜松ホトニクスは、真空紫外 (VUV)領域120 nmまでのシンチレーション光に高感度を持つシリコンフォトマル、すなわちMulti-Pixel Photon Counter (MPPC)を多数開発してきました。
さらに、希少事象探索実験 (Muon-to-E Gamma、MEG実験など、μ → eγの極めて稀な崩壊の測定を目的とした実験)では、MPPCには低ノイズのバックグラウンドが求められます。浜松ホトニクスが開発したシリコンフォトマルは、構成材料中の放射性同位体 (RI)含有量が極めて低く、LArやLXe検出器が動作する極低温環境との適合性も確保されています。これらのMPPCは77 K (−196.15°C)までの低温で動作可能です。
